Seusai perang, ia memilih kuliah jurusan elektro di ITB. Dilansir dari tirto.id, Samaun sempat ditawari melanjutkan kuliah di luar negeri lantaran banyak dosen ITB yang berkebangsaan Belanda pulang ke negerinya. Hal ini merupakan buntut dari keputusan Indonesia yang enggan menyerahkan Irian Barat ke pangkuan Nusantara.

Bersaama dengan Prof. Kensall D. Wise, Samaun berhasil mematenkan metode untuk membentuk area ketebalan sebuah silicon wafer sesuai yang diinginkan. Dilansir dari tirto.id, Paten mereka yang bernama Method for Forming regions of Predetermined thickness in Silicon, berhasil lolos US Patent and trademark Office (USPTO) pada tahun 1975. Momen inilah yang membuat dirinya ingin membangun kota semacam Silicon Valley di Indonesia. Samaun juga sempat mengagas pembangunan Bandung High Tech Valley sebagai Silicon Valley ala Indonesia. Sayang, maut keburu menjemputnya terlebih dahulu pada 15 November 2006 sebelum rencananya itu terwujud.
